Worms Ultimate Mayhem puts Worms 4 Mayhem and Worms 3D together to give you double the fun, double the pun and some crazy landscapes ready for Worm killing but is it worth 1200msp?
Ever since the first Worms game released, I have been a huge fan.2D killing with simple controls and a true meaning of “Easy to play, Hard to master” will always have a place in my heart and is so easy to pick up and play but will 3D give the same satisfaction?... Not quite
The game is a re-mastered version of 2 previously released titles Worms 4 Mayhem and Worms 3D.Consisting of 60 single player missions, crazy customization and a greatly improved camera, overall the game is better than when originally released.Up to 4 players can compete online or locally with a good selection of game modes and a fair amount of themes but choosing a mode can suck.
The menu in some cases is horrible. Each game mode is not well explained nor is the ability to randomly generate landscapes for online play.I was staring at different game modes and thinking “What does that involve” for example, I did not know what BnG was until someone pointed out it was a game mode using only Bazookas and Grenades. This problem could have easily been explained in the menu but was not.
There is a story line to the single player game mode to which you are frequently given funny videos to watch.Worm humour does not stop there though.Multiplayer shows you some funny worm actions and wacky sayings that we all love and expect from the pun fuelled British humoured Worms games. Animations are just as funny too. Point a sniper at a worm and it will put its hands up, point to another worm or bring up its fists. Obviously this gets seen often but it does not get old.
Controls can be fiddly at times because they don’t always feel natural like they did in the 2D games. After a while you will stop jumping off buildings and into water and realise that the B button is no longer you weapons menu.Distances are hard to judge especially when using grenades and bazookas but after a bit ofpractice you will become familiar with your surroundings and timings.
If you play locally, you can create random maps but online you cannot.I do not understand why this is but it is one of the simple things about Worms that we all love which also gives the game more variety.Again this was not explained properly in the menu system instead it said “Press LT to randomly generate new maps” but like I said this cannot be done for online MP games.
There are loads of great weapons to choose from such as The old Lady, Holy Hand Grenade and the Inflatable Scouser but on top of this you can create your own weapons. You can choose either a thrown, launched or airstrike weapon and then
customize the look and damage. Weapon creation is easy and fun although it can be annoying online when someone constantly calls in airstrikes.
Wormpot is a great new addition.Start up a single player game (Not story) and you can select the wormpot slot machine.Three pictures will come up and they represent changes in the game you are about to play such as low gravity.Adding a fun twist to the game I ‘am sure people will love using this but again it is a shame it cannot be used online.
Customization is bigger than it has ever been, with hats, eye wear, hand wear and facial hair it will be unlikely that you bump into another worm like yours.
The speech bank is (as usual) full of Stereotypical accents that have never been so funny. Cowboys, Police, gangsters and aliens are just a few of the choices that you can make.
The game is very different to the 2D versions we are used and I get the impression that this will be a love it or hate it kind of game.I often say “Why fix something that isn’t broken” but then again it is nice to have a change every so often.
Team17 took a risk when these first released and now they are doing it again. This time I feel it will be an even bigger hit especially as a digital download.
Are there annoying unnecessary problems? Yes! are they enough to ruin a great single and multiplayer experience? No!
Give the demo a try and see what you think. It is a nice switch to 2D and I love it and the hours of fun that are ahead but I personally I prefer the 2D games.
