Is a top down twin stick shooter brought to you by Starfire studios.Set in space and at the brink of war you have to choose your faction(s) and save the universe!
Starfire Studios is made up of ex Rare employees so you would expect greatness right?.I was very excited to be given the opportunity to review this game so lets see if it was what I was expecting?
After a quirky simple to follow tutorial based on controls and combat, you are put in the huge open world of Fusion Genesis… Well space!
Throughout the game you are able to buy ships, mine ore and take on many quests given to you by the different factions. You can do this at your own speed and if you want just go for a fly to see what’s about, that is your choice.
This is one of those top down games that looks great! Colours are bright, fresh and very well suited to what I feel space would be like. Overall the clean and crisp design is second to none and definitely one of the best looking XBLA titles out there.
The controls are very smooth and the ship responds well, it’s just a shame about the rest of the ships abilities and By this I mean the shooting and the speed.I often felt like I was a big bad ass ship in space ready to eliminate anyone in my way and then I press fire and little peas come out. This meant my ship was very weak and a laughing stock in the world of space. On top of this the ship moves very slow especially for a world this big. There is a boost option but even with this going I didn’t feel like I was getting anywhere and it didn't help that it doesn't last long.
There is a great RPG element to the game with attributes ready for distribution and lots of ships to buy and upgrade but again it all feels too slow and not like you are really progressing to an amazing beast of a machine.
Missions are very repetitive and at times I was flying around not knowing what to do or where I should be.Yes there are many factions but nothing really changes because it’s all “"Go there, Do that and come back”".
There are MMO elements to the game and by this I mean you cannot pause the game, there are other online players flying around the world and you can also join them on missions. This is a great idea and gives the game lots of re-playability but lets face it, XBLA multiplayer games rarely last more than a couple of months and I ‘am sure it will be the same here.
I like the Fusion Genesis but feel more could have been done to make it fun.
